On October 6, 2006 Virginia Tech began the certification process for the Department of Athletics as mandated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This requires an internal self-study and is Virginia Tech’s second certification by the NCAA. The first was completed in 1998. The internal self-study will occur between October of 2006 and April of 2007. In the fall of 2007 an NCAA appointed external Peer Review Team will conduct an evaluation at Virginia Tech to comment on the University’s Self-Study Report. During February of 2008 the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification (CAC) will use the University’s Self-Study Report and Peer Review Team report to make a decision regarding Virginia Tech’s Division I certification status.

The NCAA is a voluntary organization devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics. Athletics certification has been administered by the NCAA from the time it was adopted at the 1993 NCAA Convention. The process is meant to ensure a fundamental commitment to integrity in intercollegiate athletics.
